Dear OHS Families,
Thank you for coming out for Open House last Wednesday. It was a special evening to start the year and have all of you visit. Big thanks to our staff for all the work in making the night successful and providing helpful information.
Attendance Policy Handbook
As Patty and I mentioned in the Open House welcome video, we wanted to invite you to look at the Attendance Policy Handbook. Specifically, page 4 of the handbook has a nice one-page summary of important items to know about attendance. We are looking to lower our number of students who are chronically absent this year. Students are chronically absent if they miss 10% of the school year or more, whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Once a student has 19 absences in a school year, they will be considered chronically absent for the year. If your child is having difficulty coming to school over a few days, please don’t hesitate to reach out so we can provide support.
NWEA Assessments starting
Our window for the NWEA Assessments begins today, 9/18, and is open for the next two weeks. Grades K-5 will be taking the Math Assessment and grades 4 and 5 will also be taking the Language and Reading assessments. Results will go home at some point in October to families in Infinite Campus.
Author Visit- Kelly Bennett
We are looking forward to welcoming award-winning children’s author Kelly Bennett to OHS on Thursday, 9/21. Kelly Bennett is the grandmother of two OHS students, Dylan and Aidan Cummings, and we look forward to her presentations to our students in assemblies throughout the day.
Trauma-Informed Training for Staff on Tuesday
On Tuesday, 9/19, we have an early dismissal. Our full staff will be trained in Trauma-Informed Care by a regional trauma coordinator from CES, Dana Bossio. This will be an extremely helpful training to our staff.
Chromebook Insurance Deadline- October 1- Grades 3-5
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 receive Chromebooks from the school to use during the school year. The district offers insurance on the device for $30 for the year and will cover two incidents of damage, including loss. Damage to a Chromebook could be a cracked screen, a keyboard with missing keys, or other issues. Insurance enrollment is open now and will end on October 1, 2023. I recommend it as the costs for fixing these issues can be expensive. For additional information click here.
Have a good week,
David
