Dear OHS Families,

Every week is busy this time of year with end-of-year field trips, special events, testing, and more.

OHS Art Show This Tuesday

This week we get to enjoy the big OHS Art Show on Tuesday evening from 6:00pm -8:00pm in the OHS APR.  The art show will feature works from students in grades 3-5 from this year in Art classes.  I want to thank our art teachers, Heather Nokta and Hannah Grabinski, for their teaching this year and for their work in preparing for the show.  I also want to thank the volunteers from our families who are helping to get the show up and cleaning up at the end.

Grade 5 Invention Convention State Finals

Fairfield had 33 students that were selected to move on to the CT State Invention Convention Finals.  Of those 33, we had 4 inventors from Osborn Hill who were selected to advance to the Connecticut Invention Convention State Finals on Saturday, June 8th at the University of Connecticut (UCONN)!  The inventors are Joaquin Aponte with Swaps–Book Exchange System, Liam Redgate with Liam’s Lice Lock, Nuala O’Connor with Bin Buddie, and Lilly Hoey with Bump Flush.  Big congratulations to the state finalists and to our entire fifth grade for their work in creating inventions for our OHS Invention Convention.  There were so many wonderful ideas to solve problems presented at our school convention. Thank you to Mrs. Hanley for organizing our Invention Convention.

Incoming Kindergartners’ Visit

We are excited to welcome our incoming kindergarten students to our visits and orientation this coming Wednesday and Thursday. We look forward to officially welcome the newest otters on their first official visit.

SBA Update

We have completed the official ELA sections of the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAs) these past weeks, with just a few students with makeups to finish happening this week.  Next, we move into the Math sections.  The schedule below shows what we have left.

  • Week of 5/6 – Grade 3 Math and start Grade 4 Math
  • Week of 5/13 – Grade 5 Math and finish Grade 4 Math
  • Week of 5/20 – Grade 5 NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards

Reminder: It is important that students charge their Chromebooks each night when it is their weeks to test.  Please help remind your child to plug them in each night.  We also ask that you encourage your child to get a good night of sleep and a solid breakfast on testing days.

Have a great week,

David

Welcome to busy season! We know there are many events and many volunteer requests this time of year. We encourage you to participate where you can, in whatever way works for your family and schedule. The OHS Bike Bus makes its inaugural run Wednesday morning! Meet up with the Bike Bus anywhere along the route or at any one of the 4 designated "bus stops." Remember each child must wear a helmet and have an adult guardian, but a guardian can be responsible for more than one child. We will have a police cruiser and a Fairfield bike officer helping guide us on our route. Also, please remember to update School Dismissal Manager now if you plan on having your child ride their bike home alone or with a parent or guardian.

**Rain date for the Bike Bus is Thursday. We will send a Special Flash on Tuesday if the event is postponed!**

Drop off your cans and bottles for the 5th Grade Service Project

Our 5th Graders have been hard at work converting your donated cans and bottles to cash for their 5th Grade Service Project!. Thanks to your donations we are 1/3 of the way to our goal. The fifth graders will use the return money to purchase materials needed to make twist/knot blankets for childhood cancer patients.

Pro tip: Coming to OHS this week for the book fair, art show, or new kindergartener orientation? Bring your cans and bottles with you! Rinsed out deposit cans and deposit plastic bottles (no glass) can be dropped in the labeled collection box inside OHS next to the main office through May 10.

Next Week
Celebrate our Teachers May 13-17

Our OHS Teacher appreciation week is May 13 - 17 and we are so excited to show our staff just how much they mean to us. Each day we will do something special for the people who make OHS the special place it is - but we need your help!

Yard Signs Celebrating Teachers - Due Friday!

Let’s celebrate our teachers with a warm welcome as they enter the school. We are asking children to create a yard sign that will line the walkways leading to OHS. Make a sign for a specific teacher or just an “OHS teachers rock!” sign.

Each sign will have to be attached to a metal stake (Like this one, for example.) The signs can be dropped off in a box outside the front doors at OHS all this week.

Help us provide staff appreciation Meals & Treats - Drop off items Friday and next week!

Each day we intend to do something special for our staff. Below is a schedule of special days we have planned and link to sign up if you would like to contribute. Our OHS staff give so much to our children and it’s our turn to show them gratitude for all that they do! You can purchase food, bake something, or Venmo!

Fundraise now, event next Thursday
Help us hit our fundraising stride - it's the WALK-A-THON!

Our annual WALK-A-THON will take place next week! On May 17th (Friday), your child will participate in Osborn Hill’s 2024 WALK-A-THON! This is an event in which all students and faculty walk together in a loop around the neighborhood north of the school as parents and neighbors cheer them along. Every child will receive a free OHS WALK-A-THON t-shirt to wear during the walk!

What does the WALK-A-THON fundraise for?

The WALK-A-THON is one of our biggest PTA fundraising efforts at Osborn Hill. It funds programs like author visits, field trips, STEM & SEL presentations, field day and so much more!

This year, our fundraising goal is only $25 per student. To help make this achievable we have created a webpage for every student to send out to friends and family if they wish.

How to support

You should have received a flyer via backpack mail on Friday!  Donations can be made via check or online. Check out your child's fundraising page by following these directions:

  • Go to OHSPTA.com and log in

  • Click on 'My Account' on the top right corner

  • Select 'My Forms/Paperwork'

  • Find the fundraising campaign for your student to edit your page and start promoting!

  • Share your student’s link via Facebook, Twitter or Email

May 23
Watch your kids run, jump, ride and play at Field Day

We are gearing up for a favorite day of the year - FIELD DAY is Thursday, May 23! (Rain date: May 24) Mr. Marko has planned out the entire day and our students will experience a FULL lineup of FUN, however, in order to make this day truly a success we need your help!

Volunteer to staff a Field Day station

The students will cycle through the Field Day activities in two sessions:

K - Grade 2: 9am - 11:45am
Grades 3 - 5: 12:15pm - 3:00pm

Volunteers are needed to staff each activity during each session.  Pro TipIf you're unable to volunteer for the entire session, you can split a shift with a friend!

Click here to sign up for one session OR both and help the kids have an EPIC Field Day!

Questions? Reach out to the field day committee - Michelle Cavanaugh and Meg Horn

Update on OHS Principal Search

We have received many questions from parents about how they can be involved in the search for Mr. Hudspeth's replacement. As part of the process, the District will be convening a listening session for parents of the OHS community to share the qualities they are looking for in their next principal. The OHS PTA has been in communication with the Superintendent's Office in scheduling this listening session, and have provided the Central Office information on other major conflicts this month (e.g. concerts, art show, etc.) to ensure maximum participation at the listening session. The date is currently being finalized and will occur sometime this month (May). We will circulate information once the date is confirmed.

Parents Night Out thanks

We had a great time watching a photo-finish Kentucky Derby with our OHS friends at the Parents Night Out event last weekend.  Thank you to Cammie Liberty and Kate Quas for all your work putting together a fun night!
