Dear OHS Families,

We are just about 1 week away from the start of the 2024-2025 school year!  I hope you have enjoyed a wonderful summer with family and friends!  Although it has been a busy summer for me, I was able to spend a few days in Ogunquit, Maine with my wife last week for our anniversary.  It was a beautiful place to relax at the end of summer, and I came back feeling refreshed to start the school year!

Please read the important school notes below, and please be on the lookout for additional communications as we move towards the first day.

.......................

Summer Reading

I had wonderful news from our local library: We had a 5% increase in summer reading logged through the Summer Reading Challenge.  A total of 210 Osborn Hill students signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge, and our awesome readers logged 138,631 minutes!  Way to go otters!

.......................

Building Updates

It has been a very busy summer at Osborn Hill with the construction involved in outfitting our school with air conditioning.  The lower wing mechanicals are now in place and the ceilings have been re-installed in the classrooms. The infrastructure on the roof has been reinforced for new HVAC units, and the additional electrical service required for the system is being installed this week.  All of the work is scheduled to be wrapped up by the end of the week so the school is ready for day one.  Phase 2 of the project will begin later in the fall, and I will give you more details as we get closer.

It has been a challenge getting the classrooms and hallways detailed when working around the construction.  I want to extend a huge thank you to Bill for his leadership, and to Carlos and Todd for all of their hard work and dedication this summer!

Class Assignments/Staffing

Class assignments should be available for you to see in Infinite Campus on either August 20th or 21st.  I will send you an email that morning to confirm when they will be posted.  The teams at OHS worked hard on the placement process to create well-balanced classes that will set students up for success.  Not every student can get the teacher they hoped for, but please know much thought and planning went into building effective classrooms. Please support your children to be positive and excited about the upcoming school year when you receive your placements.

In regards to the number of classes at each grade level this year:  We will have 3 sections of kindergarten, fourth grade, and fifth grade; and we will have 4 sections of first grade, second grade, and third grade.

Below are our wonderful teaching teams at each grade level:

Kindergarten: Marimina Milas, Ellen Sigmund, and Ann Marie Soto

  • Ms. Milas will be going on maternity leave for 12 weeks shortly after school starts.  We are lucky that Ms. Sheila Cashell, a beloved retired teacher from Osborn Hill, has agreed to return and teach in her absence.  Ms. Cashell taught for 20 years at Osborn Hill, and her experience will be extremely helpful as we start the school year.  Wishing Ms. Milas and her family the best!

Grade 1: Brittany Goldrick, Jill Miller, Jessica Ottavio, Amy Selter

Grade 2: Wendy Accomando, Kyana Cox, Parvin Gorman, Courtney Jamison (Ms. Jamison moved up from kindergarten.)

  • Ms. Gorman will be starting the school year on maternity leave.  Congratulations to the Gorman family on the birth of their son Aiden!  We have hired Ellie Solari to teach in her absence.  Ms. Solari recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor's degree in Elementary and Special Education, and a minor in Educational Policy Studies. She made the Dean’s List every semester at Wisconsin and graduated with Distinction.  Ms. Solari engaged in a variety of student teacher experiences and was the Assistant Camp Director at the Fairfield Beach Club.  Ms. Solari is a product of the Fairfield Public Schools and a talented new teacher: I am thrilled we were able to secure her services!

Grade 3: Julia Burns, John Grammatico, Deanna Renzulli (Behpour),  Megan Steigleder

  • We welcome Ms. Steigleder to the grade 3 team this year.  Ms. Steigleder received her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Connecticut State University, and earned her Masters in Elementary Education from Sacred Heart University.  She interned, student taught, and substitute taught in Fairfield before getting a permanent position in 2nd grade last year at Mill Hill School.  When they reduced a section for this year, we were fortunate to get Ms. Steigleder at Osborn.  She is an enthusiastic and talented 2nd year teacher, and we are excited to have her join our faculty at OHS!

Grade 4: Caryn Fleming, Lisa Hohlweck, Brenda Perry

Grade 5: Celia Edwards, Liz Finck, Marisa Huban

The following are additional staffing changes this year: Ms. Hannah Grabinski was here part time last year, but will now be our full-time art teacher. Ms. Megan Strauss will be our Spanish teacher for grades 3-5.  We will be sharing Ms. Strauss with Fairfield Ludlowe High School, where she has taught for the past eight years.  Ms. Abby Wells was our building sub last year, but will be a paraprofessional in our special education department this year.  Finally, we welcome Ms. Sarah Flores as our building substitute teacher.

.......................

What else is new this year?

I am sure you have heard of some of these changes, and will learn more at Open House, but here is a summary of the more significant changes this year:

  • The district will be implementing a new literacy program in all grades, K-5, Houghton Mifflin’s “Into Reading.”

  • All Grade 5 students in district will be taught all core subjects (reading, writing, math, science and social studies) from their classroom teacher instead of switching classrooms.

  • All kindergarten classes in district will add “purposeful play” to their daily schedules.  Purposeful play is a teaching strategy where teachers lightly scaffold play that is fun and creative, but also provides key learning opportunities in literacy and numeracy, as well as key other important kindergarten skills, such as: sharing, collaborating, compromising, organizing, planning, self-regulating, and adapting to new situations.

  • There will be an accelerated math class in grades 4 and 5 for those students who qualified.

Student Visits next Monday

On Monday, 8/26, we have our school and classroom visits in the morning.  Below is the schedule:

That will lead us to our big first day on 8/27!

Please remember there is an informal meet and greet with me on 8/22 from 3:30-5:30 in the back of the school if you can make it.  I look forward to meeting all of you in the coming few weeks.  I also want to thank PTA President Melissa Miller and Acting President-Elect Kate Fierman for welcoming me to OHS and helping me get acclimated.  Finally, I want to thank in advance all of the OHS parents who “Chalk the Walk” to create an inviting entrance for all of our students. Please remember to keep an eye out for additional communications, and enjoy the last days of summer vacation!

Join us for Tears and Cheers on the first day of school

On the first day of school, please join us in the APR (Cafeteria, for those new to OHS!) as soon as the students have entered the school for some coffee and treats. From 9am-9:45am, together we can shed “tears” or shout a few “cheers” as you send your kiddos off to school at OHS! It’s a great way to connect with other parents at Osborn Hill, and we will have sign-up sheets available for some of our upcoming PTA events and committees.

OHS Mentor/Mentee Program is Back

Our OHS Mentor/Mentee program is back again this year! Our goal is to pair incoming Kindergarten or new OHS families with veteran families who can help answer any questions and support your family through the school year.

Mentee: New to OHS and have a million questions? Let us pair you with a seasoned OHS family to guide you through the year!   Please email Eva Elinskas including the grades of your children and any other info that will help us find you a good match.

Mentor: Please email Eva Elinskas if you would like to be a mentor a family.

Deadline to sign up for either is Tuesday, August 27th.
