Dear OHS Families,

We had a wonderful first week of school!  It was magical to see the classrooms come alive after a long summer of cleaning and construction.  Teachers did an amazing job creating welcoming and joyous spaces for the children, and the energy in the building was filled with excitement and positive vibes.  Teachers focused a great deal on fostering a sense of community in their classrooms, connecting with their new students, and teaching students classroom and school routines to set them up for a productive and pleasant school year.

Thank you to the PTA for and all of the families for contributing to a positive start to the school year!  The PTA organized a number of components to make Day One special for everyone: Our resident artists participated in “Chalk the Walk” and created some amazing images to welcome students to a new school year.  Parent volunteers built impressive balloon sculptures to create a festive atmosphere, and the PTA arranged for Ozzie the Otter to make a special appearance.  In addition, the PTA provided snacks and beverages for teachers, as well as a special teacher lunch and breakfast, and they hosted a “Tears and Cheers” event for families!  Parents also supported the students on the first day and everyone was patient and safe as we made sure all of our students arrived safely and made their way to their new classrooms.  Thank you for all of your efforts for such a terrific start!

A few important notes:

  • Reminder- Wakeman Aftercare starts on Tuesday.  If your child participates, please make sure that is listed on School Dismissal Manager.

  • We secured an intern this year from the University of Bridgeport, Mr. William Feffer.  Mr. Feffer is working on his Master's degree in education, and he will be part of our community this year, learning from our amazing teachers, and providing coverage for teacher absences and meetings.

  • The children did their first fire drill on Friday, and they did a wonderful job!  They left the building orderly and quickly, and they stayed in their lines quietly outside awaiting further instruction. That is the kind of response that maximizes safety.

  • Please make sure no cars park against the building in our upper loop, as it impedes the drop off and pick up procedures on that side of the building.

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend, and I look forward to a great 2nd week of school!  Take care.

Sean F. Smyth, Principal

Get any good pictures of the kids heading to school on the first day? Email them to ohsottersyearbook@gmail.com and we may feature your photos in the OHS Yearbook! Let us know the name of the kids featured and their class or grade. Keep us in mind for photos of students you take at OHS sponsored activities throughout the year.

OHS Variety Show - Coming (very) soon!

Repeat after me. Change is good! Change is goooood! This year, our beloved Variety Show, will be held on (drum roll please…)

Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 11:30am

at the Klein Auditorium in Bridgeport!!

We know, we know. Way earlier than usual. This move will give us more than 500 additional seats so ticketing won’t feel so crazy and we will now be able to accommodate our OHS friends who aren’t in the show, grandparents, cousins, and neighbors.

We'll have plenty more details in the coming weeks, and we'll host a Zoom call to walk you through all the info and answer any questions.  Breathe! It's going to be awesome.

After School Activites are starting soon!

We are almost ready to present our fall slate of After-School Activities! We will send a special flash later this week with this session's offerings, and registration will open next Monday, September 9, at 8pm.

What are after school activities?

This is an opportunity for your child to stay after school to participate in a variety of classes and experiences led by some of our amazing Osborn Hill teachers and staff. Classes are typically held once a week through each 4-6 week session, and run from the end of the school day until 4:40pm.

You MUST be a PTA member to sign up!

ASA registration is on a first come, first serve basis, so make sure you're ready to go by renewing your PTA registration for the 2024-2025 school year.  More info on signing up below!

Join the PTA! Registration is open

Joining our Parent Teacher Association provides instant financial support for our students, and it’s also a great way to stay informed about what’s happening at school, and connect in meaningful ways with other parents.

How to Join

In order to join the PTA you must complete THREE registration steps:

First, register for the PTA

Second, update your family information, adding this year's teachers

Third, complete one PTA waiver per child.

  • Go to www.ohspta.com and click “Register/Login.” Sign in with your information, or, if you haven’t yet signed up for a Membership Toolkit account, create a new account.
  • Click "Join PTA" on the OHS PTA homepage and follow the three steps listed:
    • Add a PTA membership to your cart, click "Save and continue"
    • Update your family's directory information and **change your child(ren)'s teacher for the new school year**
    • Fill out a waiver for each child
  • Proceed to checkout!

Note: Membership must be renewed each school year. Only 1 membership is necessary per family!

Library Volunteers needed

This is one for the books! We are looking for volunteers to support the library staff checking in and shelving books and with other simple library tasks.

Commitment is 1-2 hours per week during the entire school year (typically the hours of 11-2:30).  There will be a short, in-school training and we’ll make the schedule once we have our volunteers!

Interested? Email Vicky Siewert

Back-up Clothes Needed for Nurse's Office

OHS Nurse Jim has requested brand new back up clothes and undergarments for him to have if kids should need it. Please sign up for items that you plan to purchase here.

After you purchase, you can send in with your child or drop off in the front office, with a note: attention: Nurse Jim. Please send your items in no later than Friday, September 13.

Questions? Please ask Melissa Miller

Forgot something? Use the OOPS Cart

Parents can leave labeled items that your child forgot and will need that day at school on the Oops cart in front of the main entrance of the school.  Be sure to put your child’s name and homeroom on the item.

Please try and remember to pack everything they will need for the day before leaving home to limit interruptions to the classroom (i.e., chromebooks, binders, backpacks, instruments, lunches, snacks, water bottles, jackets, sneakers, etc)

School Dismissal Manager

Parents are reminded that you need to update School Dismissal Manager daily if your child is going to be absent, tardy, going on vacation, or leaving early. You also need to change your dismissal for the day by doing an exception if your child is attending an after school activity or scout meeting, etc. Dismissal exceptions must be made by 2:30pm each day.

School App Roundup

We know, there are a LOT of apps, websites and logins to use as the school year begins.  Here's a quick guide to what you can download to help you through the week:

Infinite Campus is where you can find grades, test scores, add money to your kids lunch account, and see their Student ID number

ParentSquare shows you communications from teachers, room parents, and the District. You can adjust your settings to receive notifications as they arrive or once daily.

School Dismissal Manager is where you report absences, early dismissals, and alert the school if you child will be going home a different way than normal.

The FirstView app lets you track your child's bus in real-time.

You can find lunch and breakfast menus on our website or on the FD MealPlanner app

The OHS PTA has an app, too! Log in through Membership Toolkit to view the family directory, calendar, or the Flash.

Join our first PTA meeting next Friday

We hope you'll join us for our first PTA meeting of the school year next Friday, September 13 at 9:30am in the APR (that's the all-purpose room for those new to OHS!). You'll get to meet parents, hear from Mr. Smyth, and learn about what we're planning for the year.

You can find our full schedule of meetings for the year on our PTA website - we alternate between morning and evening meetings so everyone has a chance to join. Can't make it? We'll post minutes from the meeting on our website so you can stay in the know!

Harvest Faire: Raffle items wanted

Mark your calendars for this for a day of fall fun at year's OHS Harvest Faire on Saturday, October 26th!

Raffle items wanted

We are now collecting for our annual Harvest Faire raffle. If you or anyone you know have sports / show tickets, a fun experience or any other idea or prize for donation please reach out to Ali Galperin or Eileen Ainsworth. The deadline for prize ideas is September 25, with the physical items needed by October 18.

We will also need baskets to hold the prizes. Have a basket to donate? Drop it off in the office.

Room parents needed!

We are still searching for 2 Room Parents for 5H. If you're able to help, please email Rachel Thomas or Teresa Goldstein. Thanks!

Weekly Wrapup
Thanks to our volunteers for a great first week!

We are so thankful for our Family of Friends that contributed to such a successful kick-off to the school year!

Thank you to all who donated treats towards the PTA's luncheon for OHS staff last Monday. It was great way to show our thanks as they prepared for the first day of school. A special thanks to Kate Fierman, Courtney Cataldo and Beth Nori for help with setup.

Thank you to Danielle Brower for giving the Teacher's Lounge a refresh with new decor and snacks.

Thank you to all who stopped by to chalk the walk before the first day of school. The sidewalks looked so inviting! Thanks to Lisa Ludwiczak and Brittany Holzhauer for heading this up, and to our back-to-school Ozzie for greeting the kids in the morning.

To close out a great first week, on Friday we used PTA funds to treat the teachers to coffee and bagels - and a new toaster for the break room.

Have a great week!
