Dear OHS Families,

I experienced my first Osborn Hill Variety Show on Saturday, and I was blown away! The kids did such an amazing job with their performances, and they showed tremendous bravery in getting on stage in front of a packed house at The Klein. (So did the moms who got on stage! It often takes more bravery for adults to get up there than it does for kids, so kudos to all of you for taking that leap for your children!) The talent and organization demonstrated at the event was truly exceptional, more so than I have ever seen in an elementary school production! Thank you to all of the parents who put so much time into the event, and a special thank you to the PTA Variety Show Committee Chairs for managing the process: Sarah Fridman, Marissa Jacobson, Kim Oliver, Anne Truman and Brittney Cianciulli. The whole community should be very proud of the OHS Variety Show!

We had a busy week at OHS, in addition to getting ready for the Variety Show. Thank you again to the PTA for securing New York Times best-selling author Chris Grabenstein to present to our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Mr. Grabenstein did an excellent job educating and entertaining our students. Our K-2 teachers also had an HMH coaching day on Wednesday, where an outside consultant spent the day at OHS training teachers. Although we continue to grow our craft in all areas of literacy instruction, we shifted our learning focus from using HMH to teach reading and vocabulary, to learning more about using HMH to teach structured literacy skills, including phonological awareness, phonics, and spelling. We also had a grade 5 CARES assembly on Thursday that focused on “teamwork,” and we continued our Acadience testing in grades K-3.

This coming week we will finish up our Acadience testing, and we will notify you once all of the mid-year assessment results scores are posted into Infinite Campus. The PTA has also planned a special assembly for our students on Wednesday, a really unique act by two deaf magicians. The act has a reputation for some really amazing magic tricks, while also exposing students to the world of the deaf.

Finally, we will gear up for the following week’s kickoff to our inaugural Otters Read Together, in which our school community will read The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate. I believe the PTA has given out all of their copies of the book, but you can purchase the book online or at a local bookstore this week if you want to participate next week.

A few important reminders for this week:

  • Please make sure you update your SDM daily with any dismissal changes.

  • Friday is a Spirit Day.

I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead! Take care.

Sean F. Smyth, Principal

Get your tickets for OHS night at the Islanders hockey game

Meeting your OHS friends at the Islanders game? Get your tickets now to make sure you'll be able to sit together! OHS Night at the Bridgeport Islanders hockey game is Saturday, February 22 at 5pm. 5th grade families - make sure you get your tickets so your children can perform with the OHS Chorus during the first intermission!

We have a section reserved for OHS. All family members are welcome, and each child must attend with a ticketed adult responsible for them. Tickets come with a free hat!  A small portion of each ticket sale will go to the OHS PTA.

Questions? Contact Kate Fierman

Save the date for the OHS Sweetheart Dance

Save the date - the Osborn Hill Sweetheart Dance is Saturday, March 1! Ticket sales will start next week.

Every OHS student is invited to join the dance with one special adult (parent, caregiver, etc.). There will be a photobooth, craft area and games, hot chocolate bar and desserts, and of course, a DJ! In order to accommodate all students, the dance is divided into two sessions:

4:30pm-6:15pm | Kindergarten - 2nd Grade students

7:15pm-9:00pm | 3rd - 5th Grade students

*Please note - we cannot accommodate older students in the younger session, and vice-versa.

We will have all the details on ticket options and volunteer opportunities in a special flash later this week!

Souper Bowl Canned Food Drive February 7

Eagles or Chiefs? Root for your favorite team while helping your community at our Souper Bowl canned food drive on Friday, February 7!

During morning arrival we'll have cars in the lower loop of the parking lot decorated with football gear. (You don't need to make a special trip to OHS - send your kids with their cans on their normal arrival routine and we'll have helpers directing them to the right place!) Place your donated items in the bin of the team you think will win the big game. We'll tally up the donations and Mr. Smyth will announce the winning team that day! There will also be donation boxes for anyone who wants to send in items earlier in the week, starting next Monday, February 3rd.

Donations will benefit the Bridgeport Rescue Mission. They appreciate anything you can give. Some suggestions:

● Canned fruit

● Canned veggies

● Jelly in plastic containers

● Peanut butter in plastic containers

● Tuna

● Pasta

Next week starts Otters Read Together

Otters Read Together begins February 3!  If you requested a book, they will be delivered to the oldest child you listed on the survey this week.  Just a reminder that these books are borrowed from Dwight and will get passed along to McKinley, so please be sure to return books at the end of the month! If you are still looking for a copy of the book, there are copies at both the Main Library and OHS library to borrow as well as some classroom copies.

On February 3 there will be a program in school with the library staff from the Main Library, as well as a video message from the author recorded just for OHS!  Students will have the opportunity to hear the first few pages of the book during the program, play some games and get engaged.  To learn more about Otters Read Together, read the welcome letter and see our complementary materials (trivia, vocabulary, resources), view the padlet here.

If you have any good photos of kids sledding at OHS, or posing at the Klein, we'd love to see them! Send your pictures to ohsottersyearbook@gmail.com for a chance to be featured in the 2024-2025 yearbook. Please include the name and grade of those pictured. Thank you!

Thanks from our school social worker

Last week we shared a request for help needed in our OHS community. Our school social worker, Stefanie Cappellieri, would like to pass along her thanks:

"Thank you SO much for all your support and efforts. The donations and kindness from the OHS community have been so generous."

- Stefanie Cappellieri

Thank you for an amazing Variety Show!

Thank you to the entire OHS community for all your support of our Variety Show performers!

Special thanks to Principal Smyth and Assistant Principal Day for your unwavering support of the production and for always cheering on our children. Thank you to the OHS Office Staff for your assistance with so many of the details along the way - Mrs. Budlowski, Mrs. Gerber and Mrs. Callahan.

OHS Parents - THANK YOU and hats off to all of you as well! You serve as the choreographers, drivers, MP3 file makers, practice schedulers, costume designers, photographers, and so on. Our kids are the stars but the show would not be possible without you.

A shout-out to those who volunteered their time planning this summer and through the school year to make the show possible - the OHS PTA, especially Amy Brennan, Jen Braun, Brittney Cianciulli, Sarah Fridman, Marissa Jacobson, Melissa Miller, Kim Oliver, and Anne Truman - THANK YOU!

Lastly, thank you to our dress rehearsal volunteers, ticket makers/takers, finale organizers, program/slide show creators, and backstage/narrator helpers - Rachel Boxer, Tina Cerbone, Courtney Cataldo, Karalyn Ciucci, Heather Crum, Justine Dolan, Meghan Doody, Tanya Dunne, Dana Figa, Livia Gillespie, Rebecca Hasiotis, Brittany Holzhauer, Gina Lauricella, Jane Loh, Tara Manzueta, Rachel Parrish, Elisabeth Pavlofsky, Amanda Schmidt, Jessica Truchan, Lisa Sauer, Tara Van Horne, and Dana Zuskin.
