Dear OHS Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! I had the pleasure of experiencing my first OHS Sweetheart Dance Saturday evening! It was a terrific night! Everyone looked so elegant, the children had a ball, and it was great to get the community together! Thank you to the PTA Sweetheart Dance Committee, for all of your hard work in putting on an amazing event. The committee started decorating Friday night and spent most of Saturday at school, transforming the APR into a sparkling ballroom, which is quite the feat! I also want to send a special thank you to Bill Augustine, our Head Custodian. Bill spent his entire Saturday and Saturday Night at OHS making it possible for the kids to have a special night. Thanks Bill!

We have a lot of great things happening at school this week! It is Reading Celebration week: Please have students bring in books to donate to the book swap Monday through Wednesday. Everyone will then be able to shop for books on Friday. Friday will also be a day where everyone wears a “readable” shirt - shirt with words on them. Please make sure the messages are all appropriate for school. Also, please remember that Tuesday is an Early Dismissal day and Wednesday is our Grade 5 Invention Convention.

I hope you all have a terrific week ahead! Take care.

Sean F. Smyth, Principal

It's Reading Celebration Week!

Get ready to celebrate all the things we love about reading! We have a week full of fun activities planned including multiple chances to win a $10 gift card for the Spring Book Fair!

Kids will have multiple chances to earn tickets to be entered into the drawing. On Friday we will choose two winners from each grade level!

Ways to win tickets for the gift card drawing

  • Donate to the Book Swap! Volunteers will be collecting gently used books Monday through Wednesday. Families that donate will earn a ticket for the gift card drawing for each child at OHS.
  • Students brought home a packet of activities on Friday. Complete the activities to earn tickets for the drawing! Each activity completed = one ticket. Kids can play bingo, guess emoji book titles, and create their own book spine. Return the completed activity packet to the office by Friday and make sure to label the front page with your name and homeroom and have a parent sign it.

Other activities

  • You’ve heard of the Masked Singer, now meet the Masked Reader! On Friday the kids will hear from a reader dressed in costume and will have to guess who it is!
  • Wear a shirt you can read! To finish out the week, wear a “readable” shirt with a positive message on Friday.

Switch out your old books at the Book Swap

Book Swap collection is underway! The Book Swap is a fantastic event where students can bring in books that they're ready to pass along and then they will have the opportunity to shop for "new to them" books. On Friday, all classes will visit the Book Swap during the school day. Each child will leave with new books to take home. We also invite the teachers to make selections to add to their classroom libraries and hope to restock the teachers' lounge with some good reads.

We will be collecting book donations from 8:30-9:15am in the OHS lobby Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Please bring books in boxes or bags, if possible.

What books can I donate?

We are collecting school-aged children's, young adult and adult books. We are hoping to restock the teachers' lounge with some good books as well. Please minimize toddler and baby books though as we had a lot leftover last year that we donated.  Fan favorites are strongly encouraged such as any books Pokémon and Minecraft related, graphic novels, Babysitter Club, Magic Treehouse and other popular series books. All your donations are greatly appreciated!

Volunteers needed

We have a few spots left for volunteers to help us collect and sort books - please click here to sign up.

Any questions? Contact Elena Cabrera, Julissa Pesok and Christina Mink.

After School Activities Registration opens TONIGHT at 8pm!

Pokemon, yoga, ropes course, board games and MORE! We have something for everyone in our next slate of After School Activities. Registration opens Monday at 8pm.

  • Round 1 (Tonight, 8pm to Wednesday, 8am): Register for as many classes as you like.
  • Round 2 (Wednesday, 8pm to Friday, 8am): (NEW) Based on parent feedback, we have added in an additional round to ASA registration. If a class you chose does not meet the minimum registration requirements, you will receive an email by noon Wednesday from the OHS ASA Committee to notify you the class is being canceled, and you'll have an opportunity to register for a replacement class in Round 2.

Team Teddy St. Baldrick's Fundraiser at OHS on March 21

Mark your calendars: the Team Teddy Osborn Hill School St. Baldrick’s event, which has raised $1.6 million for pediatric cancer research since 2010, will be back at OHS in less than THREE weeks – on Friday, March 21, from 5:30-8:00PM.

Join us for a fun and meaningful evening when Team Teddy-OHS holds its 16th annual fundraiser. There will be raffles, a bake sale, Super Duper Weenie and all sorts of fun for a great cause.

Team Teddy was founded in honor of Teddy Gerber, who was diagnosed with undifferentiated sarcoma in 2009, when he was a 3rd grader at OHS. One of Teddy's most joyful times during his illness was the first Team Teddy event held in March of 2010. OHS Pack 199 had been holding St Baldrick’s events for years before 2010, and offered to hold that year’s event in honor of him. Teddy was the star, overseeing the first 'shavee' of the night (his older brother John), as well as many of his friends. He passed away after bravely fighting his illness for nine months.

Each year since we have continued to meet at OHS on a Friday night in March, to remember Teddy and to raise funds for and awareness of pediatric cancer research. In 2020 and 2021 we were forced to hold virtual-only events due to Covid, but each year we still raised over $75,000. This year we have already raised almost $29,000, bringing our 15-year total to just over $1.6 million.

The money raised by events like ours goes towards grants that allow scientists to better understand pediatric cancers and how to treat them more effectively, giving children a better chance to recover and live their lives.

Those who want to contribute without going bald can sponsor a shavee, buy treats at the bake sale, or purchase raffle tickets with the chance to win fantastic prizes. To sign up to be a shavee, make a donation, or check out our local sponsors, visit: https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/108/2025

Education budget facing cuts, meeting today

As the Superintendent noted in his message Saturday, the budget proposed by the Board of Education is facing $4.9 million cuts - this is the largest reduction in two decades. Potential cuts could impact our teachers, curriculum, and busing. For more details on the issue please view yesterday's Special Flash here

What can you do? Stay engaged: The Board of Selectmen will meet today at 10am to vote to on restoring the Board of Education's proposal. Attendance at the meeting is important to show our support for our children and teachers.  To attend the meeting, you can attend in person at the Fairfield Regional Fire School, Room 102 at 205 Richard White Way or watch the meeting on FairTV

Drop off your cans and bottles for our 5th grade service project

We'll take those deposit cans and bottles off your hands! Our 5th graders will be redeeming the recyclables to raise funds for their service project.  The proceeds will be used to purchase materials to create fleece blankets for children in need.

There's a box for your recyclables in the main hallway.  Too many cans to carry in? Contact Rachel Parrish to arrange a pickup or drop off.

Nominate our OHS teachers and staff for a CT PTA Award

The CT PTA is accepting nominations for outstanding educators which includes: principals, assistant principals, teachers, school counselors, social workers, paraprofessionals. Nominations are due March 14. All nominees must be an OHS PTA Member.

You can find more information on how to nominate here. The nomination form is linked here.

To check if your nominee is a PTA member or for questions, please contact Melissa Miller.

Thanks for joining us at the Sweetheart Dance

We had a great time dancing the night away at both of our Sweetheart Dance sessions this weekend.  The APR transformation was amazing! A big thank you to the Sweetheart Dance Committee - Rebecca Hasiotis, Marcia Lyman, Eva Elinskas, and Livia Gillespie - for all your hard work to make the night happen. We also thank Mr. Smyth and Ms. Day for their support.
